Six Degrees of Separation [Pt. 1 / 3 ]
Title: six degrees of separation
Fandom: Haven
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Duke/Audrey

A/N: I hope you all liked No Light, No Light Pts 1 & 2! =] My muse threatened writer’s block if I didn’t obey her, so here’s “Six Degrees of Separation”. It’s somewhat a sequel or continuation of No Light, No Light. Except this will be in three more parts with two degrees in each part. No Light, No Light, was pretty much about Audrey captured and tortured, her memories erased for a small amount of time, before Duke gives her that necklace, and she remembers everything. Sorry I didn’t say much about the Kid, I kinda forgot about him =/ S.D.O.S starts at the end of No Light, No Light, and pretty closely follows The Script’s song of the same name, but with a Duke/Audrey spin on it.

Disclaimer: I do not own these gorgeous people.

p.s. inspired by Florence + The Machine's "Cosmic Love", unplugged.  Give it a listen.

First, you think the worst is a broken heart.
What’s gonna kill you is the second part…

It steals the breath from her lungs. Audrey sits there on the edge of his bed, looking up at him with wide blue eyes, her lips parted in surprise. When she starts shaking her head, that’s when he refuses to meet her gaze. Duke bows his head, inspecting the floorboards beneath his boots.
“Duke, you know I can’t," she starts. She knows where he’s going with this, and it’s exactly there that she never wants to go. It’s the grey area of her history—Lucy Ripley and Duke who was much smaller then…She herself doesn’t even know the connection between them.

(She knows there is such a thing between her and him)

It lies somewhere between her quickened heartbeats when he looks at her and how unconditionally he does of her what she asks. There’s a feeling she gets when she’s with him that she couldn’t ever communicate to Nathan. His touch, the whisper of his fingers over hers—sends shivers through her. Every chaste kiss he places sets the hairs on the back of her neck on end. I’m not supposed to feel this way, she tries to tell herself, tries to resist them. She lies to herself every time this happens. I’m not supposed to feel this way. I’m not supposed to love him. ‘I’m not supposed to love him’ eventually turns into ‘I can’t love him’, and ‘I can’t love him’ inevitably turns into ‘I don’t love him’.

(It’s a lie he doesn’t know she tells herself.)

“Can’t or won’t?” he asks gruffly. His back is turned to her, and he’s touching almost reverently the necklace—her necklace, Lucy’s necklace.
“Don’t turn it into that, please don’t," she pleads, getting to her feet now. She walks over to him and lays her hand on his shoulder. It’s become a habit between the both of them.

(Exclusively her and him)

That one soft touch of her fingers on his shoulder is a wordless question. He turns toward her, lets her reach up to clasp her arms around his neck, and in his turn, he wraps his arms around her small form, holding her close. He rests his chin on her shoulder and closes his eyes, breathing her in.
“Three days until the Hunter rises, Audrey. In three days, you’ll be gone. I’m not turning this into anything; I’m just giving you the choice you know you’ve always had to make," he whispers in her ear. They remain that way for several more heartbeats before she extricates herself from his hold and backs away, shaking her head.
“I know. But, Duke, listen to me," she says, her voice harder. “It’s”—her voice wavers, and she swallows to steady it before she continues—, “incredibly selfish of you to think that you can sway me into choosing between the two of you. I hope you know that.”

(He doesn’t think it’s selfish. If what he’s doing in selfish, the words I love you are selfish too..)

“What’s the point of ‘I love you’, then? Isn’t that selfish in itself?" he counters.

Hmmmmm....I'm not too sure about this.  What do you guys think?  Reviews are love!  Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated! :D - Love, Fleur
